Denture Love and Care at Westside Dentistry

Denture love and care is our priority here at Westside Dentistry.

Di, our dental prosthetist, has over 39 years in the dental industry working with dentures. She has refined the experience over these years and we can proudly say we have it down to a fine art.

Living with dentures shouldn’t be a pain. Living without your dentures shouldn’t be drawn out. The process of achieving a comfortably fitting denture runs over a few appointments, as Di works with you to create a fit and look that you are happy with. Usually, this process can take over a month and rather than dealing directly with the prosthetist, you have to liaise with a middle man which is costly in time. At Westside Dentistry we can repair a denture in a day and create a denture up to 3 weeks.

Wearing and caring for your denture is fairly straight forward if you practice good oral hygiene. Obviously, there may be some variation depending on the denture you choose to invest in but, if you follow these simple rules your denture should have longevity.

  1. Your gums need to rest daily. Be sure to remove your denture for a period of time to allow your gums to relax from the pressure of the denture. While you can sleep with your denture in, this time of rest does provide the perfect opportunity to also rest your gums as well.
  2. Your dentures, like your natural teeth, require daily cleaning and care. Dentures should be washed in liquid soap with a denture toothbrush to gently clean and polish. After rinsing thoroughly you can sit your denture/s in a water-based cleaning solution overnight or while your gums rest. Alternatively, you can keep your denture in a mouthguard container for safekeeping. Do not wrap it in a tissue or napkin!! This is the perfect way to accidentally throw your denture away.

NOTE: Brushing with toothpaste is NOT recommended as toothpaste contains materials and chemicals that help whiten and strengthen natural teeth and these are harmful to the durable plastic of your dentures.

  1. Give yourself a chance to get used to your new dentures. It is a learning process, eating with dentures and this may take some time. Also, don’t be surprised if it takes a little longer to learn how to deal with sticky or harder foods. If you are struggling, a small amount of denture adhesive can help add stability, however a well fitted, correctly made denture should not require any adhesive for stability.

At Westside Dentistry we love to see our patients smile confidently. We take pride in our work and want our patients to be front and center during the creation of their dentures so that they feel empowered to make decisions and changes. Once you receive your new denture it is important that you feel able to make tweaks to its feel in your mouth. That is why we offer adjustments and a complimentary clean, and we guarantee your denture for a year.
